Headaches: Types, Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

Tension Headache

Tension (or cervicogenic) headaches are the most common type of headaches. They have a characteristic pain pattern where pain starts at the back of the head and spreads to the front on both sides of the head. A tension headache is often caused by tightness of the soft tissues around the head, neck, shoulders and can be aggrevated by poor posture, stress, anxiety, depression, or head/neck injury because these can cause the head and neck muscles to become tense. 

Symptoms of Tension Headaches

Symptoms of tension headaches include: 

  1. Pressure that feels dull or achy, or feels like a tight band around the head
  2. Widespread head and/or neck pain
  3. Pain in the head, neck, temples, back, shoulders
  4. Difficulty sleeping 
  5. Fatigue

Causes of Tension Headaches

Common triggers of tension headaches include: 

  1. Poor posture
  2. Lack of sleep
  3. High stress levels
  4. Caffeine
  5. Smoking
  6. Depression
  7. Alcohol
  8. TMJ (also, jaw problems such as clenching or grinding)
  9. Eye strain
  10. Illness such as the flu, cold, or sinus infection

Migraine Headache

The second most common type of headache is the migraine headaches. According to the World Health Organization, migraines are one of the 20 most disabling medical illnesses in the world. About 12% of people in the United States suffer from them, and migraines are 3 times more likely to occur in women than men. The symptoms of migraine headaches are extensive, from throbbing head pain to audio/visual sensitivity to nausea, all of which can be incredibly debilitating. 

Symptoms of Migraine Headaches: 

With migraine headaches one may experience: 

  1. Pounding, pulsating, or throbbing head pain
  2. Pain that begins on one side of the head and may or may not spread to the other side
  3. Intensified pain on the sides of the forehead
  4. Nausea and vomiting
  5. Dizziness, lightheadedness, and/or vertigo
  6. Fatigue
  7. Visual disturbances including temporary blind spots, blurred vision, or flashing lights
  8. Heightened sensitivity to sound, light, and/or movement
  9. Numbness, weakness, or tingling sensation in a body part

Causes of Migraine Headaches

Common triggers of tension headaches include: 

  1. Food and food additives
  2. Caffiene
  3. Alcohol
  4. Stress
  5. Sensori stimuli
  6. Intense physical exertion
  7. Changes in sleep patterns
  8. Changes in environment
  9. Medications
