Myofascial Release

Similar to the way Spiderman’s suit hugs his body, fascia (or myofascia) is a strong connective tissue that wraps around the entire body from head to toe. Normally fascia is elastic and able to stretch and shorten in response to the body’s movements. Accidents, traumas, surgeries, scar tissue, stress, poor posture, and poor body mechanics can decrease the fascia’s elasticity resulting in pain and a limited range of motion.

Myofascial Release is a form of manual therapy, where a clinician’s hands are used to achieve movement in fascia (also called myofascia). The technique involves the use of gentle, sustained pressure over 30 to 50 minutes to release fascia tightness.

Traditional Myofascial Release Techniques vs. ASTR

One problem with myofascial release is that the traditional techniques only address one aspect of an injury, the myofascial restriction. A therapist must also release excessive scar tissue and trigger points and decrease muscle tightness in order for a patient to feel complete recovery.

Advanced Soft Tissue Release (abbreviated as ASTR) is a new manual therapy specialty that is revolutionizing the way patients experience long-term pain relief. ASTR notonly involves maneuvers for myofascial release, but it also breaks up scar tissue, releases trigger points, and decreases muscle tightness. ASTR treats pain in a gentle, effective, and natural way, and takes a holistic approach to address the root causes of pain, not just the symptoms. Many patients experience relief from pain after their first treatment!
