Back Pain – Backaches: Statistics, Symptoms, Causes, Risk Factors & Treatment

Back Pain Statistics

Back pain/ backaches are experienced by about 80% of the population at some point in their life and is most common in adults between the ages of 35 to 55.  It is known to be the reason most people go to the doctor and/ or miss work and one of the leading causes of disability.  The entire back can be affected (upper, middle, or lower)  by back pain and can include sciatica, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, muscle, and nerve problems. Often back pain is self inflicted due to poor body mechanics, sporting injuries, accidents, and improper lifting technique.  By correcting improper body mechanics, exercising the core muscles, and maintaining proper body weight most people can completely avoid surgery and even avoid excessive treatment.
