Cluster Headache

Cluster headaches usually occur on one side of the face. Cluster headaches feel like clusters or cyclical patterns of pain. Sometimes this type of headache will awaken the person from sleep in the middle of the night. The headache symptoms may last for weeks to months. It is not uncommon to experience a remission period during which the headaches stop for months. The causes of the cluster headache is unknown.

Cluster Headache Symptoms

  • Severe pain and/or swelling located around one eye (sometimes radiates to the face, neck, head)
  • Sharp or burning eye pain
  • Restlessness
  • Face pain on only one side
  • Excessive sweating
  • Eye redness
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Light sensitivity
  • Drooping eyelid

Cluster Headache Characteristics

  • Occurs daily
  • Occurs consistently the same time everyday
  • Occurs at night
  • The pain begins and ends suddenly

  • Men
  • Alcohol use
  • Smoking
  • Ages 20 to 50
