Rebound Headache

Rebound headaches usually occur in individuals that have a history of migraine and/or tension headaches where the individual overused headache medications. 

Symptoms of Rebound Headache

  • Daily headache, usually in the morning
  • Nausea
  • Restlessness
  • Memory problems

Medications that can cause Rebound Headache

Taking frequent or large doses of the following drugs could cause a rebound headache:

  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
  • Daily caffeine
  • Codeine
  • Narcotics
  • Aspirin
  • Headache medications that contain caffeine (e.g. Excedrin, Anacin)
  • Imitrex, Zomig
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (e.g. Aleve)
  • Phenerbel-S, Ercaf, Cafergot, Bel-Phen-Ergot S, Ergomar, Bellergal-S, Wigraine, Cafatine PB and Migergot
  • Fioricet, Supac, Goody’s Headache Powder, Fiorinal
