Trigger Point

A trigger point is a tight area or knot within a muscle. This may feel small (like a bean) or large (like a ping pong ball). A trigger point maintains a contraction and causes the muscle to tighten. trigger points can also be found in soft tissue, scar tissue, ligaments, or tendons and causes a dull ache. Trigger points can produce back, neck, or jaw pain and can commonly be misdiagnosed as arthritis or tendonitis, bursitis, or tennis elbow.

Trigger Point Symptoms

There are a wide array of symptoms, here are just a few:

  • Headaches
  • Chronic Pain
  • Numbness/ Tingling
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Earaches

Trigger Point Treatment

Travell & Simons’ state that trigger points are palpable contracted knots in the muscle’s tissue. The presence of trigger points in the muscle might cause pain and muscle shortening (muscle tension), which Doctor Jacobs calls muscle hypertonicity. Hypertonicity is an excessive muscle tone when compared to the normal feeling of muscle with palpitation while the muscle is in a resting position. ASTR® is considered a neuromuscular re-education technique. ASTR® technique stimulates the nervous system by stimulating the Golgi Tendon Organs, (GTO’s) which decreases muscle hypertonicity and releases trigger points.

Natural/ Non-surgical trigger point Treatment

In order to relieve trigger points, we address the problem holistically and naturally, without medication. We use the following approaches to relieve trigger point symptoms:

  • ASTR® Tools: Our doctors use a variety of ASTR® tools to release scar tissue and myofascial restriction, which can decrease flexibility and add more pressure on the trigger point area.
  • Special exercise program to decrease pressure on the muscles, nerve and joints, strengthen the muscles, stabilize the muscle and help the patient to return to normal function and activities.
  • Special instructions on how to speed up the recovery time.
